Community Games organisation was founded by the late Joe Connolly in 1968, Donegal entered the Athletics competition. The event was held in Santry, Dublin and Ben O’Donnell RIP from Lifford was the manager.

In 1972 it was decided to enter a number of events and Patsy McGonagle, Ballybofey,who is now a member of the Irish Olympic Committee acted as Secretary. The groups attending the finals that year included Athletics-manager,Patsy McGonagle; Handball (2 teams)-manager, John Kelly; Soccer-manager, Fr.Con Cunningham; Swimming-manager, Frank Kelly, Bundoran.

The first Athletics Gold Medal was won by Gerard McGinley from the area now called The Lagan. The first County AGM took place in the Butt Hall, Ballybofey in 1972 and the following officers were elected, President-Fr. Con Cunningham; Chairman-John Kelly; Secretary-Frank Kelly; other members were Myles Gallagher and Tom McBride,Carrigart. Sligo Committee member John McGettrick attended the meeting to oversee the forming of the first County Committee. John Kelly RIP remained as Chairman for over 25 years and was a great ambassador to the Games.

The County has become deeply involved at National level these past number of years,the Nat. President is Gerry Davenport who has overseen major developments in the organisation and Bernie Brennan is also a member of the Board Of Directors, both from Letterkenny. There are also members on the various National committees. A huge number of volunteers from the County assist with the running of the Finals and Festivals each year.
