ASTI Teachers Strike: A Personal Opinion
By Donna Martin
As a member of the ASTI union I have been on Striketoday. I would like you all to know that I personally am set to gain absolutely nothing fromtoday’s strike. I opted to lose a day’s wages and I stood side by side on the picket line with my colleague and friend Hayleigh, who among others I am fighting for. Isatmy Leaving Certificate in 2003 and Hayleighsathers in 2005. I studied for 4 years and went straight into the teaching profession. Hayleigh opted to extend her knowledge and studied for 5 years before doing her teacher training. We both teach the same number of hours. We sometimes teach extra hours to cover the Maths syllabus. We both spend a lot of time in the evenings and weekends preparing work for our classes/marking tests etc. We are both involved in extracurricular activities in the school which we undertake in our own time.
Hayleigh joined the teaching profession in 2012 which means she is on a different pay scale to me. I believe myself and Hayleigh should be on the same pay scale.
